Parks

The National Park of Aigüestortes and the lake of Sant Maurici

Located in the heart of the Pyrenees (Spain), this is the most genuine representation of a mountainous area. The majestic landscapes and views and the highly varied flora and fauna that live within its borders make this is a truly unique location.  Centuries old woods of fir trees and black pines are scattered around the park, which also contains nearly 200 mountain lakes. This is the habitat of the wild goat, the capercaillie, the marmot and the legendary bearded vulture (also known as the lammergeyer).

 Upper Pyrenees Natural Park

The Parc Natural de l'Alt Pirineu , was created by Decree 194/2003 of the Generalitat de Catalunya on 1st August 2003. The park is located in the administrative districts of Pallars Sobirà (Spain) and l'Alt Urgell (Spain) and extends across a large area of the Catalan Pyrenees (Spain). With its area of 69,850 ha, it is the largest natural park in Catalonia (Spain) and its mountains include the highest peaks in Catalonia (Spain).

This is an area of great ecological value and scenic beauty, which preserves a series of traditional communal rights over the exploitation of local resources. These traditional rights have helped to define the area's cultural landscape and have contributed to the creation and conservation of its patrimony. It was decided that declaring this area a natural park was probably the best way of guaranteeing the protection of the ecological and cultural values contained within its boundaries and of establishing an administrative and organisational system capable of assuring the sustainable development of its territory.

 The Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park

The Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park was created in July 1983 in response to the need to protect the Sierra del Cadí and the surrounding area. It has a total surface area of 41,342, ha. which makes it - together with the recently established Alt Pirineu Natural Park - one of the largest parks in Catalonia. The park stretches across three comarcas (rural districts): L'Alt Urgell (Spain), El Berguedŕ and La Cerdanya (Spain).

The Cadí and Moixeró which are connected by the Tancalaporta pass, form an imposing mountainous barrier in the Pre-Pyrenees. They extend 30 km from west to east and divide the water courses of the rivers Segre (La Cerdanya and L'Alt Urgell - Spain) and Llobregat (Berguedà).

El Pedraforca, which is one of the most attractive mountains for climbers, occupies a special place in Catalan mountaineering tradition. It merits special attention, as it provides a beautiful and thrilling setting for climbing and is considered an authentic reference point for hikers and mountaineers in Catalonia.
